This winter, CDOT will continue to proactively monitor weather and road conditions and may implement the Traction Law and the Passenger Vehicle Chain Law to keep travelers safe and traffic moving. When issued, the Traction Law requires motorists to have snow tires, tires with mud/snow (M+S) designation, or a four-wheel/all-wheel drive vehicle. All tires, regardless of the vehicle, must have a minimum one-eighth inch tread. If weather conditions worsen, the Passenger Vehicle Chain Law may go into effect, meaning all vehicles will be required to have tire chains or an alternative traction device (like AutoSock). Failure to comply with either law, especially if a motorist delays or blocks traffic, may result in a fine ranging from $130-$650.
