In 2023, the town introduced curbside bin composting as part of its trash and recycling services for residents, including single-family homes and multi-family complexes with up to eight units. This initiative aims to educate residents on effective composting practices, supporting the town’s net zero goals by reducing food waste in landfills, which produces methane, a potent greenhouse gas. To encourage participation, the town is hosting a Compost Pail Giveaway during the Showdown Town concert series. These countertop compost pails, equipped with carbon filters to mitigate smells, make it convenient to collect food scraps at home. Two bins are given away at each concert, with more opportunities to win throughout the series. All you have to do is answer a few composting questions, such as:
- What is one way you can ensure your bin stays fresh and not stinky? Freeze compost until pick up day. Spray your bin with cooking spray to avoid stickiness. Use compostable liners. Add shredded paper, paper towels, cardboard, etc. at the bottom of your bin.
- What percentage of the town’s greenhouse gas emissions are produced from waste? 14%
- Can you compost coffee grounds and coffee filters? Yes
